After Zohran Mamdani’s historic win, supporters and critics alike asked the same question:
I think it’s very possible he can. But in America, we rarely recognize extraordinary administrations in real time.
Mayors are instead judged on crises, news bites, and vibes. All of that matters, but it doesn’t necessarily reflect long-term impact. That work is slower, harder to see, and often only fully felt after someone leaves office.
Many of us voted for Mamdani because his policies were bold. We didn’t expect magic. We wanted someone willing to push, be brave, and build infrastructure for a better, more equitable future.
So the question I’m seeking to answer is, How far can he get in the next 3 years and 11 months?
To answer that question, I’ve created the Mamdani Meter. The site tracks how well he's doing in turning campaign pledges into NYC policy.
It’s an attempt to distill and measure the long-term work: the policy scaffolding, the layers of approval, and the slow grind that determines whether bold dreams become reality.
The Mamdani Meter is not about every move the administration makes. I won’t be assessing Zohran’s handling of a historic snowstorm or tracking whether the comptroller re-invests in Israeli war bonds. Instead, the focus of the site and newsletter is: are we on a credible path toward the future Mamdani outlined for New Yorkers?
Thirty days in, and the picture is promising. Five of his policy ideas have seen real movement – from a task force created to speed up affordable housing development to the announcement with Governor Hochul of free daycare for 2-year-olds.
Going forward, each newsletter will include a recap of progress since the last installment, plus a deeper dive into one specific policy area2 So you’re gonna want to:
Till next time,
Niki
1 Zohran famously has been solid in the vibes department. Which is why I was taken aback this week when he rolled out what he calls the “ABC” (the Adams Budget Crisis). The name and delivery reminded me a little too much of “Pokémon Go to the Polls.” Is Mamdani entering his cringe era? Maybe, but the substance matters more than the style for this newsletter, so that’s the kind of commentary that will stay safely contained in footnotes like this one.
2 Those are just my initial ideas, but I’d love to make this newsletter useful for you (yes you!) So if you have a specific question about the administration, from how something is supposed to work to what steps are involved, write in! I won’t have all (or likely any) of the answers, but I will dig until I can find out.
